Lip-Tie Release
Lip-Tie Release
A lip-tie occurs when the band of tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums is unusually tight or restrictive, which can affect nursing, oral hygiene, speech, or the spacing of the front teeth. At Jeremy Montrose, DMD, lip-tie release is evaluated as part of a broader look at oral function, growth, and airway health, rather than as an isolated procedure.
Who Provides Care
Dr. Jeremy Montrose, D.M.D., performs functional frenuloplasty for lip and tongue ties in patients of all ages. His training includes a Comprehensive Frenulum Inspection and Surgery Workshop covering infants through adults, as well as Functional Frenuloplasty training at the Breathe Institute.
What the Evaluation Looks At
- Lip Mobility — how freely the upper lip moves and seals, which can influence feeding in infants or oral hygiene later in life.
- Related Ties — many patients are also screened for tongue-tie, since restricted tissue often affects more than one area.
- Growth and Function — how the tie may relate to speech, dental spacing, or myofunctional patterns over time.
How Release Is Performed
When a release is recommended, Dr. Montrose uses a soft tissue laser for the procedure. This approach is intended to allow precise, minimal-discomfort treatment of the frenulum tissue. Depending on the findings, release may be paired with other services, such as myofunctional therapy or early orthodontic evaluation, to support ongoing oral development.
