TMJ Evaluation and Treatment

The temporomandibular joints connect your jaw to your skull and play a role in chewing, speaking, and overall jaw function. When these joints or the surrounding muscles become strained or misaligned, patients may notice jaw pain, clicking or popping, limited jaw movement, or recurring headaches. A TMJ evaluation looks closely at joint function, bite alignment, and muscle patterns to understand what may be contributing to these symptoms.

Who Provides This Care

Dr. Jeremy Montrose, D.M.D., leads TMJ evaluation and treatment at the practice. His training includes a Comprehensive Overview of TMD and Orofacial Pain Disorders at UCLA School of Dentistry and Botulinum Toxin Level I training, and his clinical focus includes oral orthotics for TMD.

What an Evaluation May Include

  • Clinical Assessment — a review of jaw movement, joint sounds, muscle tenderness, and bite relationship.
  • CBCT Imaging — 3D imaging that gives a detailed view of jaw and joint structure to help guide treatment planning.
  • Headache-Related Oral Evaluation — consideration of whether jaw or bite factors may be connected to recurring headaches.

Treatment Approaches

  • TMJ Oral Orthotics — custom oral appliances designed to support joint position and reduce strain.
  • Therapeutic Injections — used as part of a broader plan to address muscle tension contributing to TMJ symptoms.
